Project #4

Dear Professor Rodrigo and my peers,

I remember starting my writing career here at The University of Arizona very worried that I would not produce college level work. Although I had a very funny, intelligent, and caring English teacher in high school, I was still worried that it would not be the same. My high school English teacher was a graduate from Stanford University and Harvard University and he basically taught me everything that I know. One of the most memorable experiences I had in my English class during my senior year, was performing “Othello”, which is a play written by William Shakespeare. This not only helped me with my writing skills, but it also improved my public speaking skills. I really admired my English teacher because he had a very unique teaching style that was very effective for me. He probably learned this from his experience at Harvard and Stanford, which makes him special and stand out from the rest of the teachers I had. He knew that every one of his students had a different learning style so he taught in many different ways that truly helped every one of his students succeed in his class. He knew that some of his students were visual learners, some were auditory learners, and many were kinesthetic learners. He incorporated every student’s learning styles to ensure that every one of his students did well in his class. To be honest, his way of teaching is much better than a lot of teachers I have had. He didn’t make students suffer by having them teach themselves the material because some teachers are heartless and do that. I have had classes that were basically self-taught, which I did not appreciate at all. That was one of my successes in high school but I know that I will have many more successes in the future.  


Taking my first English class here at The University of Arizona boosted my self-confidence since I had an amazing professor and he enjoyed every one of my essays that I turned in. I ended up getting an “A” in ENG 101, which made me feel less insecure. In fact, Professor Toso was one of my favorite professors so far here at The University of Arizona. The transition from ENG 101 to ENG 102 was not difficult for me since I had many teachers in the past who have made me the writer I am today. Although I did not do as well as I did in my ENG 101 class, I still learned a lot in this class and I got to write many essays that were in different genres such as controversy analysis, rhetorical analysis, public argument, and reflective portfolio. Many of these genres were outside my comfort zone but I was still able to write well-written essays for each of them.


In the beginning of the semester, I stated that I was a Heavy Reviser but like most people, I can sometimes be a procrastinator. I believe that I became both a Heavy Reviser and Sequential Composer. Being a Heavy Reviser may not be the best one but I find it to be the most effective since I am used to that writing approach. I really like this writing approach because it allows me to write all of my ideas down before editing my essay. This makes it a lot easier to write an essay and it makes me feel less frustrated. But by the end of this class, I realized that being a Sequential Composer is very important and is an approach that is very beneficial. Sequential Composer is a very clever approach in writing because these types of writers spend the same amount of time for each draft. Planning, drafting, and revising are very important when it comes to writing a well-written and meaningful essay. I believe that using the approach that I’m already used to which is Heavy Reviser and being a Sequential Composer, will help a lot in the future as well. Especially when I start my career after college because writing is an essential tool that is needed in basically every job in our society. (See Blog Post)
 

In conclusion, I learned a lot in this class and I was able to write many essays that were outside my comfort zone. For example, I learned about QRGs, which was very helpful since I did not know anything about QRGs before I started this class. Writing a QRG was definitely out of my comfort zone but I am glad that I was able to do it. Being able to write my own QRG is very meaningful to me since The Tony Robinson Case was a controversial topic I was very passionate about. It felt really good to write about this case, since I knew that the final decision was unfair, wrong, and just heartbreaking.  (See Project #1) Also, I was able to write a rhetorical analysis essay that was actually well-written. This essay got the highest grade out of all of the other essays that I wrote, which says a lot. I wrote about how men are also victims of sexual violence, since most people think women are the only victims. I find it unfair how women are always perceived as the victims and men are always perceived as the perpetrators, which is the reason why I chose to write about this.I believe that I successfully got my message across to the audience since I used many credible sources and statistics. (See Project #2) 
Finally, I was also able to write a Public Argument, which is a genre I was actually familiar with. I chose to write about the same topic as Project #2 because I wanted to make my argument even more persuading. Also, I wanted to make people understand that women being the only victims of sexual violence is just a misconception. I believe that I did a pretty good job with this essay since I added more credible sources and statistics. (See Project #3)

I am very thankful that I took this class because I learned a lot about writing and this course strengthened my writing skills. I am very proud of myself because I was able to write well-written essays even when the genres were out of my comfort zone. I also had a very nice professor who gave me great feedback on my essays, which really helped me become an even better writer. This class has truly prepared me for the future and I am confident that I will succeed in life, especially when it comes to writing.

14.3 Reflection on Peer Review Project #4


I peer reviewed Steven Duron and Andrew Rocha drafts.

I learned a lot from reading other people's drafts. This helped me think of ideas of what to write about for my own draft. It was actually really fun to read what other people wrote about because many of them were very personal. I really like how Steven talked about how he is a Heavy Reviser and how it helps him write better. I really liked everything Andrew wrote about! His letter was well written and almost perfect. I really like how he was personal and gave many examples. For example, he talked about how he had to drop out of school for awhile and get a job. This was very personal and meaningful. Overall, both of them did a very good job and it's only their first drafts!

Weekly Learning Reflection (Deadline #13)

I believe that I was able to achieve most of the Program and Course goals. The most important program goals I was able to achieve include Goal #1 which is Rhetorical Awareness, and Goal #2 which is Critical Thinking and Composing. I was able to achieve Goal #1 because I was able to "Learn strategies for analyzing texts’ audiences, purposes, and contexts as a means of developing facility in reading and writing." (Rodrigo, 2015) Not only that, but I was also able to achieve Goal #2 since I was able to reading and writing for "critical thinking, research, problem solving, action, and participation in conversations within and across different communities." (Rodrigo, 2015) I was also able to achieve many of the Course Goals. The ones that are the most important to me (that I was able to achieve) include,"Develop an argument with persuasive appeals to your audience" and "Locate and analyze evidence to develop an argument." I was able to develop an argument with persuasive appeals because I used many credible sources and quotes. Not only that, but I also used accurate statistics and imagery, which made my public argument a lot stronger. I was able to locate and analyze evidence to develop my argument because I used many credible sources and I got a lot of good quotes and statistics from them. Overall, I was able to accomplish most the program and course goals but these are just a few of the ones that stand out the most to me.

             Are Women Always the Victims of Sexual Violence?
                            Are Men Always the Perpetrators?


Sexual violence and rape are very serious social and public health problems that many people are forced to experience. Unfortunately, “according to the U.S. Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)--there is an average of 293,066 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year.” (Francis, 2010)  Furthermore, there is approximately 1 sexual assault every 107 seconds. When it comes to being sexually assaulted, women are overwhelmingly perceived as the victims, while men are usually perceived as the perpetrators. This is unfortunate because men are also in danger of sexual violence. It is unfair how men are always perceived as the perpetrators when men are also the victims of sexual assault and rape.


              This public argument is targeted toward individuals who are aware and interested in the controversy, and who believe that women are the only victims of sexual violence. This public argument is going to make people understand that woman being the only victims of sexual violence is just a misconception. Women are not hurt more by sexual assault than men are, that is just a stereotype. Also, this will lead people to understanding that women are not always the “weak” ones and that there are evil female perpetrators out there in the world. This public argument is going to inform and persuade the audience that women are not the only ones who have to experience sexual assault and rape.


“Sexual Violence Against Men and Boys” written by Wynne Russell, proves that women are not the only ones who experiences sexual assault and rape. The author uses multiple rhetorical strategies such as credibility, logic, and emotion to prove his overall message to the audience. This article proves that men are under-represented when it comes to being the victims of sexual assault and rape. “The limited statistics that exist almost certainly vastly under-represent the number of male victims.” (Russell, 2015) This quote shows that men are far less likely to report being sexually assaulted compared to women. The author also uses many credible sources to prove that male-directed sexual violence is still undocumented. Russell uses credible sources such as INGOs, UN agencies, governmental & intergovernmental organizations, and international criminal courts. Not only does the author use credible sources, and accurate statistics, but the use of emotion truly makes the audience have sympathy for men. This is an effective way to inform and persuade the audience to change their perception of men, when it comes to sexual violence. Russell also explains where men usually encounter sexual violence, which makes his overall argument even more persuasive. It is very sad because men are also victims of many different types of sexual violence but males are always perceived as the ones who commit the crime. This includes, “rape, sexual torture, mutilation of the genitals, sexual humiliation, sexual enslavement, forced incest and forced rape.” (Russell, 2015) Many males have encountered some type of sexual violence but most of them are afraid to speak up and report being sexually assaulted. I also think males are afraid of reporting sexual assaults because of the  “not “boys being boys” but an exercise in power and humiliation.” (Russell, 2015)I believe that males are afraid of being judged, seen as less of a man, and most males think people wouldn’t believe them. That is why many males tend to not report being sexually assaulted unlike most women.


“When Men Are Raped” written by Hanna Rosin, reveals that men are frequently the victims of rape and sexual violence. It may sound surprising and ironic but it is true and men do experience many types of sexual violence. This article proves that men are often the victims and women are often the perpetrators. So why are men suddenly becoming the victims of sexual violence? A recent analysis of BJS data proved that “46 percent of male victims reported a female perpetrator.” (Rosin, 2014) This shows men reporting being sexually assaulted by a female perpetrator, but the statistic is still not completely accurate. The percent of males being sexually assaulted can be much higher if more males actually report being sexually assaulted.


“Males Are More Likely To Suffer Sexual Assault Than To Be Falsely Accused Of It” written by Tyler Kingkade, is actually a very surprising article. This article talks about how males are actually more often the victims of sexual violence than to be falsely accused of it. This article proves that men are not always the perpetrators. Woman being the only victims of sexual violence is just a misconception. It is actually really upsetting that people honestly think women are the only victims of sexual violence because it is obviously a misconception. People who think that way truly need to change the way they think. The research at an advocacy group for male survivors called 1in6.org, “suggests that at least 1 in 6 boys experience sexual abuse before age 18.” (Kingkade, 2015) This shows that men are victims of sexual violence just like women. It has been proven that men often experience sexual violence because many males are forced to experience sexual violence in the military, jails (detention), and from female perpetrators.


There are many possible solutions to this controversy. In order for this controversy to be resolved, more males need to actually report being sexually assaulted so that researchers would get a more precise and accurate statistic. If more males reported being sexually assaulted, they would not be under-represented when it comes to being the victims of sexual violence. From reading this public argument, I am hoping that people would change their mindset and understand that women are not the only victims of sexual violence. Women are not hurt more by sexual assault than men are. That is just a stereotype and misconception. People need to be more aware and sympathetic to men because it is truly unfair how men are always perceived as the perpetrators. Using these credible sources (evidences) proves my argument that men are also victims of sexual violence.

                                  Reflection: 

1. What was specifically revised from one draft to another?

I actually revised a lot from one draft to another. I fixed how my essay was organized, which made my essay a lot better and easier to understand. I also added a lot more detail to each of my paragraphs. I also used more credible sources, which really helped me a lot.

2. Point to global changes: how did you reconsider your thesis or organization? 

I reconsidered my thesis statement by writing out multiple thesis sentences. I chose the best one out of all of them. I also reconsidered my organization because I felt like my essay needed to be organized better. This made my essay a lot better. 

3. What led you to these changes? A reconsideration of audience? A shift in purpose? 

I decided to make these changes because I wanted to better address my audience about the controversy. I also realized that there were 2 or more audiences. This includes people who are aware and interested in the controversy and people who believe that women are the only victims of sexual violence. 

4. How do these changes affect your credibility as an author?

The changes I made do not affect my credibility as an author since I used many credible sources. 

5. How will these changes better address the audience or venue? 

These changes will better address the audience because my essay is a lot more detailed and it is organized. 

6. Point to local changes: how did you reconsider sentence structure and style? 

I did not reconsider my sentence structure but I did reconsider my style. I changed my style by making my essay more organized.

7. How will these changes assist your audience in understanding your purpose? 

These changes will assist my audience in understanding my purpose because I organized my essay better. I also used many credible sources which will inform and persuade the audience in believing my argument.


8. Did you have to reconsider the conventions of the particular genre in which you are writing? 

No, I did not have to reconsider the conventions of the particular genre because I liked the genre I chose. 

9. Finally, how does the process of reflection help you reconsider your identity as a writer? 

The process of reflection helped me reconsider my identity as a writer because it made me think about myself as a writer and what I wrote (essay). This helped me write an even better essay and become a better writer.
